Background

The need to establish a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area (GKMA) has been part of its’ development vision for over a decade. Indeed, Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area Urban Development Plan (2013), which the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) supported, outlined major corridors important for the BRT service as an anchoring framework for better urban growth management and development.

Using existing data on a preliminary basis, the 2022 BRT Readiness Assessment conducted by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) with the support from the WB, confirmed Sunyani and Ejisu corridors as the immediate choice for the implementation of the phase-one BRT system with services in operation along 28km of exclusive access. Subsequently, these two corridors and the off-corridor segments to be identified as the complementary route network if developed will consist of the area of study for the Kumasi Urban Mobility and Accessibility Project (KUMAP).

As a follow up, the World Bank is supporting the GoG in improving the mobility conditions through the preparation of the KUMAP for GKMA. The project development objective is to improve mobility, safety, and accessibility along selected corridors and planning capacity for sustainable urban growth in the GKMA. The targeted Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies (MMAs) on a preliminary basis are Kumasi, Ejisu, Kwadaso, Oforikrom and Atwima Nwabiagya. The Ministries of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development (MLGDRD), Transport (MOT), Roads and Highways (MRH), through the Department of Urban Roads (DUR) on behalf of the GoG, have secured USD$6M from the World Bank as Project Preparatory Advance to prepare the Project.
